Before we begin this how-to, you must have the following:

  • A working Wi-Fi connection in your house.
  • Apple iTunes  v6.0.4 with songs on your home computer (XP/Vista).
  • At least 1 iTunes playlist with songs.
  • PSP with the newest firmware.

If you only have a 32 MB memory card and use iTunes as your primary music software, this is a great way to listen to music on your PSP easily if you have a Wi-Fi connection in your home (SeeHow to Establish an Internet Connection on Your PSP)

Follow these steps to listen to your iTunes collection on your PSP via a Wi-Fi connection:

1) Download iTunes-PSP-Server.exe and save it to somewhere on your computer.
2) Disable any firewalls and/or keep port 8080 open.
3) Launch iTunes and then click on the iTunes-PSP-Server  icon that you just downloaded.
4) In your computer interner browser type in “http://localhost:8080″ (without quotes) in the address bar.
5) You have successful set up the server if the "iTunes RSS Server" page appears.

If the iTunes RSS Server page didn’t appear make sure your firewall has authorized “iTunes-PSP-Server.exe” to access the internet completely. You may also want to add a rule into your firewall to keep port 8080 open. The “black box” is the server, DO NOT close it.  If you have no idea what all of that stuff is, just ignore it and keep reading this guide.

6) Before going any further make sure you know the IP address of the computer running iTunes and the iTunes-PSP-Server.  There are a couple ways to see what your computer's IP address is:

Method #1:

To find your IP address go to:

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections ->            ->Network Connections-> Click on your Internet Connection icon -> Support Tab.

Windows Vista users should use Method #1!

Method #2: Another method is to go to Start -> Run… -> type “cmd” hit enter -> type “ipconfig” in the window and press "Enter". Your IP Address should be displayed there.

Your local IP address should look something like this “192.168.1.xxx”.

Once you know what your Local IP Address is:

7) Turn on your PSP and go to the Internet Browser.

8) Enter “http://IPADDRESS:8080″ (without quotes) into the address bar.

9) When the "iTunes RSS Server" appears, add it to your PSP bookmarks.

4) Now click on any orange RSS icon and “Add This Channel”.

5) Close the PSP Internet Browser and go to the  Main Menu-> Network -> RSS Channel.

6) Select a playlist you added and you're done!

Notes:

  • This how-to only demonstrated how to access your iTunes Library over when you are using your home internet connection. If you wish to access your iTunes Library music from any “HotSpot” or Wi-Fi location, you will need to forward port 8080 in your router to allow your Local IP to be accessible externally.
  • To close the iTunes-PSP-Server just select the black window and press CTRL+Shift+C and it should close. If you update your iTunes library once the server has already been started, selected “Reload Library” on the webpage in your PSP browser. The server can only stream non-copyright protected (DRM-Free) MP3 and AAC files.
  • Sorry, but currently you cannot stream video from iTunes, just music.  The only possible way you could get close to that is to have the videos already converted in MP4 format and then put them on a
playlist, and download them to your PSP through RSS feeds.  Thats almost pointless because its easier to just use a USB cord to transfer videos.besides, it takes FOREVER to download videos from RSS feeds to your PSP even if its just a few megabytes!
  • Currently, with the PSP's newest firmware update, it can only handle viewing the first 100 items
of any RSS feed. Therefore, to access more iTunes content, I suggest creating many smart playlists such as top music, most played, etc.  Sony
said they were going to change the limit soon (but even though soon for Sony means probably a year) update your PSP often to see if there is a higher limit on the amount of items you can have in an RSS feed.  Click here to learn how to update your PSP's firmware.
